Why get married in Church?

Choosing to get married in church not only gives you a fantastic setting to make your lifelong promises to each other but adds a spiritual dimension to your marriage and becomes a place where you can return at other special times in your lives to remember the day you 'tied the knot'. A church ceremony includes God and looks to him for help and guidance as you set out on the next chapter of your lives together. God’s blessing upon marriage is the main attraction to getting married in church for many couples, whatever their beliefs.

The vows and promises that two people make when they get married are solemn and lifelong, the importance of which is recognised and felt when held within a ceremony in which those promises are made, not only publically, but before God. Marriage vows made in this way will help you to stay together and grow together. God and your church are there to care for you and support you throughout your lives together, through all the ups and downs, helping you to keep your vows.

A wedding is a very special day in every couple’s life and it is our privilege that so many couples choose to marry in one of our six churches. Graffoe Parish want to help to make your wedding day extra special in any way that we can and hope that your church wedding will leave you with memories that you will cherish forever.

Can I get married in Church?

How much will it cost?

There is a required legal fee for marrying in a church. In 2019, it costs £496 if you marry in your home parish. This basic legal fee includes the cost of the vicar, the church, calling your banns, a banns certificate, the marriage certificate, lighting and all administration.

If you do not live in Graffoe Parish it will cost a little bit extra, between £44 (if you both live in the same parish) or £88 (if you live in different parishes). The reason for this is that the legal notice of your marriage (Banns) will have to be published in your parish(es) of residence, as well as in Graffoe Parish. These extra costs also include the certificate(s) you will need to prove that the Banns have been published before you can legally marry. These fees are set by the Church of England nationally and are the same for every church.

Optional Fees for your wedding in Graffoe Parish include:

Heating (Advised October to April inclusive): £60
Organist: £60 (Plus an extra £60 if the ceremony is to be filmed)
Bells: £15 per bell ringer (dependant on number/type of bells)
